Artist Statement

I am a printmaker specializing in intaglio and relief printmaking.  The process of printing and reversing the image allows me enough detachment to explore the image using reductive methods.  I experiment within the printing process as well as in the reduction processes.  I find myself in an ongoing dialogue between the reaction of maintaining control and the unpredictable process of creating art.  This process serves as a point of departure from the familiar and uncovers the hidden structure on an elemental level as well as a psychological level.

My focus within the past three years has been uncovering ideas and images that are simultaneously present and illusive.  Many aspects of my work are about uncovering hidden truths both within me and in the very nature of perception itself.  Through the combination of color, form and process I present the structure and resulting chaos that inevitably comes with the clarity of truth.

My prints use map-like elements as well as overlays of abstract color forms to create unique one-of-a kind prints.  I am fascinated by the idea of challenging the traditional notion of printmaking.  Instead of relying on the plate as a means of reproduction, I use it as an element to develop my concepts as individual entities.  Most of my concepts are based on current events or aspects of personal relationships.

Currently, my art is moving in a more representative direction.  I am using literal images to convey ideas regarding abstract human behavior.  I am exploring ideas of addiction, identity and camouflage as a mechanism used to cover up insecurities.  I want to clarify meaning and intent in life, and my art serves as a mirror for my own introspection.
